mg, mcg, and mL: reading peptide calculator inputs
A number is only useful with the right unit. Learn what common fields describe and which values cannot be converted on their own.
mg and mcg describe mass. mL describes volume. A calculator needs the right information to connect them; it cannot choose a dose or verify a product.
Mass and volume answer different questions
Milligrams (mg) and micrograms (mcg, also written µg) describe mass. Milliliters (mL) describe volume. They are different kinds of measurement, so an amount in mg is not automatically the same number in mL.
The metric prefixes define the relationship between milligrams and micrograms: 1 mg equals 1,000 mcg. This is a unit relationship, not a suggested dose. The National Institute of Standards and Technology defines milli as one thousandth and micro as one millionth.

Concentration connects mass and volume
Concentration describes how much of a substance is present in a given volume. A field labeled mg/mL describes mass per milliliter. A field labeled total mg describes a total amount. Those fields do not describe the same thing, even if they happen to show the same number.
Before using any calculator, identify what each input is asking for and where its value comes from. Do not copy a value from a similarly named field without checking the complete unit. Preserve the original label or instructions so you can return to the source if something looks inconsistent.
A calculator can perform arithmetic on supplied values. It cannot inspect a vial, confirm its contents, validate a label, determine suitability, or decide what amount a person should use. A result is only a calculation from its inputs.
Do not treat syringe markings as milligrams
A number described only as “units” is missing context. Do not assume it means mg or mcg, or that a remembered marking applies to another product, concentration, or measuring device. Keep the original instructions and device context attached to the record.
The FDA has reported dosing errors involving compounded injectable semaglutide, including confusion between milligrams, milliliters, and “units.” Its advice is to ask the health care provider or compounder how to measure the intended dose. Use an input checklist, not a remembered shortcut
For recordkeeping, the goal is to capture information faithfully and make uncertainty visible. Review the full name and unit of every field before saving it. An extra moment spent checking the source is more useful than a precise-looking result based on the wrong category of input.
Keep decimal values legible, retain their units in notes and exports, and avoid copying a bare number between tools. If an input is missing, leave it unresolved until you can verify it. Do not work backward from a desired calculator result to guess what a label must mean.
